Recovery Timer Adaptation in SRM
نویسندگان
چکیده
SRM is a generic framework for reliable multicast data delivery. The retransmission requests and replies used in SRM error recovery are multicast to the entire group. SRM uses random timers to avoid the message implosion problem, and the eeectiveness of SRM's duplicate suppression depends critically on the design of these random timers. In order to achieve good performance in a dynamic network environment, the random timers should be adaptive to the network and session dynamics. This paper focuses on the scaling behavior of the random timer adaptation mechanisms in SRM. Through analysis and simulations, we analyze the relationship between the timer setting parameters and performance, investigate the representative timer adaptation approach proposed in 1], and present a collaborative approach of random timer adjustment. Generally speaking, the representative approach elects representatives to send retransmission requests or replies; whereas the collaborative approach distributes the error recovery workload among members.

SRM is a generic framework for reliable multicast delivery. In order to maximize the collaboration among the group members in error recovery, both retransmission requests and replies are multicast to the entire group. SRM uses random timers to eeectively suppress duplicate requests and replies. However, a few members with frequent losses can still cause frequent retransmissions to all the group...
متن کاملScalable Session Messages in SRM
Multi-party applications are of great importance, and perhaps the greatest challenge is achieving both a) robustness in terms of adaptation to dynamic topology and group membership, and b) scalability in terms of bandwidth, state, and processing, as the size of a group grows. Scalable Reliable Multicast (SRM) [1] is a rich example of a robust design intended to work across a wide range of group...

متن کاملImpact of Network Dynamics on End-to-End Protocols: Case Studies in TCP and Reliable Multicast1
End-to-end protocols measure network characteristics and react based on their estimates of network performance. Network dynamics can alter the topology significantly, and thereby affect protocol operation. Topology changes may result in routing pathologies (such as route loops, packet interleaving), changes to the end-to-end path characteristics, network partition etc, that then impact the perf...
متن کاملAdaptive failure detection in low power lossy wireless sensor networks
In this paper, we investigate the use of failure detectors (FD) in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). We provide a classification of FD with respect to some WSN criteria. The focus will be on energy depletion and lossy links. We propose then a new general FD model tailored to WSN constraints, called Adaptive Neighborhood Failure Detector for Low-power lossy WSN (AFDEL). AFDEL provides adaptive loc...
